Dermal Fillers vs. Neurotoxins

A common question we get asked at PST is what is the difference between Juvederm and Restylane? Or rather, the difference between neurotoxins and fillers? If they both help with wrinkles, how do you choose? We've asked Dr. Tittle to break it down for us:

What is a Neurotoxin?

The most common neurotoxins are Botox and Dysport. Both Botox and Dysport work the same way. They reduce the activity of the muscles that cause wrinkles by safely and temporarily blocking signals from the nerves to the muscles, thereby reducing muscle movement. This causes wrinkles to relax and soften.

What is a Dermal Filler?

The Dermal Fillers we use at PST are injectables like BellafillRestylaneRadiesseJuvedermVolumnaVobella, Vollure, and Restylane Silk.
Dermal Filler, or injectable filler, is a soft tissue filler injected into the skin to help fill in facial wrinkles, restoring a smoother appearance. Most of these wrinkle fillers are also temporary because they are eventually absorbed by the body. Some products even stimulate the body to produce its own natural collagen to replace collagen loss caused by the natural aging process.

How long does a Neurotoxin last?

Botox is quick-acting, with results typically visible within 3-5 days, and lasting for 3-6 months.

How long does a Dermal Filler last?

Most of the dermal fillers last from several months to a year or two before touch up treatments are necessary to extend results. Bellafill has been established through 5 years when used to correct nasolabial folds (smile lines).

What is botox best used for?

Botox works best on wrinkles on the upper one third of the face. Including the lines between the eyebrows, the wrinkles of the forehead, and laugh lines at the corner of the eyes. Also it can be used for upper lip lines, lines on the chin, and the muscle bands of the neck.

What is a Dermal Filler best used for?

Different Dermal Fillers are good at different things. Bellafill is a collagen gel that provides immediate volume and lift to correct smile lines, acne scars, and generalized volume loss in the face. Over time Bellafill stimulates collagen to provide long term volume for these areas.

Restylane can be used for lower eyelid hollow appearance. Voluma is good for long lasting cheek volume. Restylane Silk and Volbella can be used for lines around the mouth and to increase lip volume.

Sculptra is a unique product that is not a filler at all. It provides volume over time to replace the collagen that we start losing in our mid 30’s. The collagen made from Sculptra lasts for years and provides a natural and pleasing look to the face by restoring the building block of youth.
